I almost stayed home. Even though winter is at last receding I am still groggy, still trying to shake of the slumber from a long winter hibernation. Nevertheless, dry days are a precious commodity in a rainforest. So, I pulled on my rubber boots anyways, knowing that moving is the only way to shake off the slumber anyways. It was […]
Embracing the Rain
It rains a lot here. Of course, that’s to be expected being nestled in a temperate rain forest along the edge of the ocean. The trees are dense and towering, green blankets cover the landscape, complimenting the water that seems to be spilling over the edges. I once thought I knew what rain was; that was before moving to Southeast […]
2,660 Miles – The Road to Alaska
The car was packed, everything we own was tucked inside, the route planned and the maps laid ready. Adventure was ahead, the comforts of home and a tinge of sadness lingered the rearview. 2,660 miles to Alaska. 2,660 miles to the wild unknown. Terror and excitement lingered close together, the two indistinguishable from one another. I had only a vague idea of what was ahead. My now husband had been backpacking in Denali once. On the other hand I’d never been on a cruise to Alaska let alone set foot in an airport there. I had just few photos from the internet and the knowledge that it was a magical land where orcas could been seen in their wild habitat and the bears roamed widely.

Halibut Cove
Settling into the back of the skiff, I bask in the suns gentle warmth as we push off the dock. It’s peaceful out here in the refreshing autumn air and the water is smooth as glass, sparkling in the sunlight. The water glistens as a few clouds drift lazily over the mountains. I clutch the seat in mild fear, daydreaming, […]
